Stratford’s Medical Insurance Billing and Coding program will prepare you for a variety of professional roles that will allow you to impact the business and financial operations of hospitals and other medical facilities. Our associate degree program provides a comprehensive education to prepare you for:

  • Processing healthcare claims and medical records;
  • Applying financial and medical practice management skills;
  • Using medical and billing and coding procedures;
  • Accurately coding medical and surgical procedures using proper terminology;
  • Understanding the fundamentals of coding accuracy and their effect on cash flow;
  • Demonstrating ICD-9 and ICD-10 diagnosis and coding procedures; and
  • Developing effective professional communication and time management skills.

Upon graduating from Stratford’s AAS in Medical Insurance Billing and Coding program, you will be eligible for certification by the American Academy of Procedural Coders as well as the American Health Information Management Association.

Program Requirements and Online Courses

You can complete your Associate of Applied Science in Medical Insurance Billing and Coding degree through classroom instruction at one of our Virginia campuses, through online instruction, or a combination of both online and classroom instruction.  Arts and Sciences courses can also be completed online.  Students typically complete this program in 60 consecutive weeks (6 quarters)

Externships

Through Stratford’s MIBC program, you will have the opportunity to gain supervised experience through an Externship in a medical insurance billing and coding environment. In addition, you will practice direct application of all administrative and coding functions of a professional medical biller and coder giving you the tools you need to become successful in the field. Through our Externship Program you can work in some of the top healthcare facilities, including Virginia Cancer Institute and James River Primary Care.

Stratford offers learning environments that facilitate competency-based learning, testing and evaluation, collaboration and knowledge sharing. Our School of Health Science is equipped with advanced medical teaching tools, such as the SIM mannequin and simulation labs—all designed for scenario-based training that will enhance your learning experience. In addition, we maintain small class sizes, which are ideal for lab activities and encourage collaboration and information sharing among students.

Healthcare Programs that Fit Your Busy Schedule

Residential classes are offered day and evening, and the entire program is offered online to accommodate your busy schedule. All residential classes are blended with a portion of the course delivered online to reduce the time in the classroom. You can complete a class in five or 10 weeks and start your program five times a year (January, March, May, August, and September). The accelerated programs at Stratford University allow students to finish a Bachelors degree in 30 months or a Masters degree in 15 months.
