ACICS Update

You are here

To all Stratford University veteran students. Stratford University is happy to report to you that on May 21, 2018 the Department of Veterans Affairs issued an advisory notice to State Approving Agencies (SAAs) regarding the status of the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). This advisory indicates the ACICS remains a federally recognized accrediting agency for the purposes of approval for VA educational benefits. The full advisory can be found at here

To all Stratford University students.

On Tuesday, April 3, 2018, the U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos issued an Order notifying ACICS that the U.S. Department of Education has restored ACICS's status as a federally recognized agency as of December 12, 2016.

The Order comes in response to the recent ruling from U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton that the U.S. Department of Education violated not only the Higher Education Act and the Department’s own implementing regulations, but also the Administrative Procedures Act when it ignored certain evidence and data the Department had requested from ACICS in its decision to withdraw ACICS' recognition as a nationally-recognized accreditor.

This is excellent news for all Stratford University students who use federal financial aid or their GI Bill benefits since federal financial aid may only be used at higher education institutions that are accredited by a federally recognized accreditor. Bottom line – you can continue to attend school using your federal financial aid and GI Bill benefits.

More to come…but this is most certainly welcome news for our community!

Please see the announcements below from ACICS and DOE.
