  • Dean's Peer-to-Peer Internet Politics
  •    Even though Howard Dean may not win the election, he has changed Presidential politics forever. Using Convio's fundraising technology, DeanForAmerica.com has received over 110,000 small contributions, averaging $61 each. With over 500,000 registered supporters, his goal is to receive a $100 contribution from two million constituents in order to match Bush's war chest. This is good for democracy, in general, and will benefit both parties in the years to come.

His campaign is decentralized and takes advantage of Internet peer-to- peer communications, such as Dean Blogs, Dean Meetings, Dean Media Team, and Dean Defense Forces.

  • Guard Against Identity Theft
  •    Twenty-seven million cases of identity theft have been reported in last five years. Total reported five-year losses exceeded $53 billion. Theives gather their data using the classic techniques: dumpster diving, purse snatching, and phishing. Phishing is an Internet scam where a customer is asked to provide account and password information in order to "verify" the account. Last month Citibank customers were targeted. Currently PayPal customers are being phished. Check out the FTC Identity Theft Website or call 1-877-IDTHEFT.

  • Apple's iTunes Music Store is a Winner
  •    Recently RIAA began suing customers (as young as 12) who illegally download MP3 songs using programs like Napster or Kazaa . This is the wrong solution. RIAA really needs to spend time developing a better distribution system.

Enter Steve Jobs with iTunes for PCs, Macs, and iPods. iTunes is the right solution at the right time! Users can listen to part of a song (30 seconds) without charge. Buying and downloading the full MP3 song is 99 cents. Digital Rights Management (DRM) is built into the iTunes client. iTunes was named music Invention of Year by Time Magazine. Expect song prices to drift downward as this technology becomes understood and accepted by the music industry.

  • Electronic Voting Machine Report Card
  •   Students at Johns Hopkins Security Institute analyzed the computer code for the Deibold Voting machines purchased by the State of Maryland. They questioned the process used for code validation and the code's susceptibility to hacking. Diebold's response was legal action against those who questioned their code.

On other fronts, several electronic voting machines malfunctioned in Fairfax County. Republicans fear that some votes may have been lost. The MicroVote machines used in Boone County, Indiana, posted almost 144,000 votes in a county with only 19,000 registered voters. After some adjustment, the machines functioned properly.

It seems that now many want to see a paper trail in case a recount is mandated. California will require all voting machines to have voter-validated paper receipts by 2006. Expect other states to follow.
