Bruce
Potter, a local security guru, is spearheading an effort to
bring wireless Internet access to Northern Virginia. Bruce
is founder of NovaWireless, a non-profit group that seeks
to build networks of high speed Internet access points using
802.11 Wi-Fi wireless technology. This grassroots organization
has a membership that is devoted to establishing wireless
access points that are free or that operate on a cost-recovery
basis.

| BAE Systems Hiring! | | |
It's
good to hear that a local company is hiring IT personnel again.
BAE Systems is hosting a job fair at their Reston location
on Wednesday, November 13, from 4:30 to 7:00 PM. They will
be conducting interviews for a variety of positions,
and will be prepared to make offers on the spot. All positions
require a security clearance beyond Secret. This is an exciting
opportunity, so don't miss out!

HDTV Is a Girl's Best Friend

The
Consumer Electronics Association has released a study finding
that women are major buyers of consumer electronics, purchasing
over $55 billion in technology equipment. 64% of the women
surveyed would rather have a digital camera than a pair of
half-carat diamond earrings. 58% of them would prefer an HDTV
set to a one- carat diamond ring. This study will give all
the guys the excuse they need to buy electronic toys for their
spouse or girlfriend!

SPAM Attacks Have Tripled Since Oct 2001
| | |
Brightmail,
the leading ISP SPAM filter, has released statistics indicating
that SPAM attacks are on the rise. The total number of SPAM
attacks for October 2002 has risen to 5.3M, from 1.6M the
same month last year. Each SPAM attack may send out unsolicited
email to thousands of individuals. 36% of monitored SPAM was
financial offers, 12% adult materials, and 31% product advertisements.

Touch Screen Voting Worked in Florida
| | | Touch Screen electronic ballots were introduced for the
November 5th election in sixteen percent of all counties
nationwide, including the controversial state of Florida.
The machines performed flawlessly. Most problems that
did occur were caused by lack of training. Seventy-five
percent of all counties are expected to use this
technology within six years.
