  • Tech Talk Guest: Alan Paller, SANS Institute
  •    This week our hosts welcomed Alan Paller, Founder and Director of Research at the SANS Institute. The SANS Institute is a cooperative research organization designed to give graduate-level training to those who secure and manage important information systems. By taking a community approach in connecting 90,000 technical users, and helping to develop the Internet Storm Center, Alan has been instrumental in designing a global defensive tactic that is effective against a Distributed Denial of Service threat.

  • Protect Yourself from SPAM
  •    Since the first consumer application of spam in 1994, spam has irritated us all by filling our inboxes with junk mail. There are several ways to protect yourself from spam. First, avoid publishing your email address on any bulletin boards. Second filter your email with programs like McAfee Spam Killer, Norton Spam Alert, or Cloudmark. Third use an ISP that rejects mail from the open SMTP relays that are blacklisted by the Open Relay Database.

  • Buffer Overflows Strike Microsoft Again!
  •   Attention, Microsoft Programmers! Check all buffers before the final version is published. Yet another "buffer overflow" security hole has been found in Microsoft Outlook Express by Noam Rathus of Beyond Security. This overflow is in the section of code that performs digital signing of messages. Microsoft has already released a patch.

  • Connecting the Dots in Homeland Security
  •    The Markle Foundation released a report calling for the Department of Homeland Security to control the IT infrastructure and data analysis software that facilitates information sharing among local, state, regional, and federal agencies, as well as the private sector. Centralized analysis of the data should provide faster identification of significant events, but may also create unintended security vulnerabilities. A must read for government IT contractors.
