   Tech Talk Radio Highlights
This week Tech Talk interviewed Martin Cooper, Father of the Cell Phone, about his vision for the Internet. We reviewed our "war driving" equipment and our observations about the state of 802.11b (Wi-Fi) wireless security. Other topics included a software piracy Fatwa, bootleg movies on the Internet, the latest Internet porn law to be overturned, and much more.

  • Guest: Martin Cooper, Father of the Cell Phone
  •    Martin Cooper, CEO of ArrayComm and Inventor of the Cell Phone, has a dream. His vision is a low cost, high speed, wireless Internet that leap frogs current 3G cell phone solutions. He proposes the use of Smart Antennas to increase the capacity of cellular networks by creating a personal cell around each user. Cooper is pursuing this high spectral efficiency solution to help solve the spectral shortage problem without sacrificing system throughput. The FCC is supportive.

  • Wireless Networks Scanned for Security
  •    We put the Tech Talk "war driving" gear to the test and drove the Metro area in order to evaluate wireless security. We used a Toshiba laptop, with an Orinoco Gold PCMIA Card and Range Extender Antenna. Our scanning software was NetStumbler. 66% of the networks were not encrypted, 37% still had the default network name (and perhaps password), 62% were tuned to the default channel 6. Security was clearly not a first priority on many of these networks.

  • Software Piracy Fatwa
  •   The Business Software Alliance, the group that represents Microsoft, Adobe, and other software makers concerned about piracy, signed up another unusual partner -- the grand muftis at Al Azhar in Cairo. The highest religious authority in Sunni Islam, Sheikh Ibrahim Atta Allah, issued a fatwa, or edict, against piracy. "Piracy is the worst type of theft and is prohibited by Islam," Atta Allah declared.

  • US Porn Law Overturned
  •    Libraries can no longer use site filtering software because it infringes on freedom of speech, according to a ruling by three Federal judges. The ruling overturns the Children's Internet Protection Act, passed by Congress just over a year ago. The suit was filed by the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Civil Liberties Union.

  • Bootleg Movies Available on the Internet
  •    Movie industry is in an uproar. Amateur videos of the latest releases have been compressed into MPEG and uploaded to bootleg web sites, sometimes even before the official opening. There is currently a downloading frenzy of bootleg Spiderman and Star Wars files. This is primarily a problem in the US because of the proliferation of high speed Internet access. However, since MPEG quality does not compare favorably with the big screen experience, it is not clear whether the downloads will hurt sales.
