  • High Speed Cable Internet Connection
  •   After suffering through a severe bandwidth drought on the home front, I finally got a Cox Cable Internet connection. It delivers between 500kbps and 1700kbps and hovers around 1300kbps most of the time. Life is sweet.

I enthusiastically cancelled my Verizon ISDN account this week. ISDN is a very, very, very expensive alternative that I don't recommend. I only got ISDN temporarily because DSL and Cable were not available in my neighborhood.

  • Sharing Your Internet Connection
  •   The best way to share a home Internet connection is to get a gateway with a firewall. You will need to set up an Ethernet connection (either wired or wireless) to access the gateway. The gateway will connect directly to the Cable/DSL modem. If you are anxious to get started, just hook up one of the computers directly to the cable/DSL modem and activate the Internet Connection Sharing option (available in Win98SE and WinXP) to make it the gateway. Don't forget to install a firewall on this computer!

  • Cable Modem Hacking Goes Mainstream
  •   DerEnglel's program, OneStep, permits users to change the modem speed cap. It replaces the modem configuration file with a hacked version. This is not recommended by Tech Talk, since it is bad for other users and may result in being banned from the cable system! Myko Hein tried it and is now banned by AT&T cable for theft of service. His dad is furious since he now has to use a 56k dialup for Internet access. Parents beware!! Don't let your kids hack your cable modem!

  • AOL Settles Class Action Lawsuit
  •   AOL settled the class action lawsuit that claimed AOL Version 5.0 blocked competing ISPs. $15.5 million has been set aside for the settlement. Anyone, who has used AOL 5.0 and was adversely affected, will qualify. File your claim on the AOL Settlement website.
