  • New Microsoft Operating System in the Works
  •   And the beat goes on -- we have seen NT, 2000, XP, and .Net in the OS parade. The next OS on the drawing board will revamp the disk filing system, bringing it more inline with searchable database technology. This will allow multimedia searches and will integrate into the .Net architecture more completely. MS is following Oracle's lead in this arena.

  • Homebrew Wireless Network in Hawaii
  •   Bill Wiecking is networking the Big Island. Putting antennas on housetops, he has networked 300 square miles using 802.11b wireless nodes. He modified some nodes with amplifiers to get a 26-mile range! Homeowners' associations should take note. This is a great way to bypass both cable and DSL!

Optical capacity trading between Global, WorldCom, and Qwest is currently being investigated. It is thought that capacity swapping was used to improperly inflate revenues. Investors are seeing shades of Enron here. Telecomm stocks are in free fall.

  • W32/Gibe Malicious Code
  •   Another virus is spreading via email. This one looks like a Microsoft Internet Security Update. Once the attachment (q211609.exe) is opened, the virus installs a backdoor to your system and propagates to everyone in your address book via email. CERT has outlined all the details in Incident Note IN-2002-02. Update your virus protection software now.
