  • Microsoft in the Hot Seat
  •   The Department of Justice settlement with Microsoft may have made Bill Gates happy. But nine states and many competitors are fuming. The next round of legal action was launched when Sun Microsystems filed a $1B lawsuit against Microsoft for its implementation of Java.

  • Compaq and HP Merger
  •   HP and Compaq won a round this week when FTC approved their merger. However, the market has responded poorly to this combo. HP should have merged with a Professional Service operation like KPMG. Walter Hewlett continued his valiant effort to kill the deal. Shareholder vote is scheduled for March 19th.

  • PGP Dumped by Network Associates
  •   Network Associates finally gave up trying to make money from PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) Encryption software. PGP was developed my Phil Zimmerman as a shareware product. The market never accepted that fact that NAI converted it to closed source. Phil quit NAI last year when they refused to release the code. Phil now wants to setup a PGP Open Source development movement.

  • Netscape Navigator Caught Spying
  •   Netscape Navigator was found to be sending search information back to AOL without permission. Information includes IP Address, search term, browser install date, and unique ID number. AOL says the information was used for billing participating sites for traffic. Microsoft Internet Explorer does not spy.

  • Senate and House Pass IT Tax Breaks
  •   Even though the stimulus package is stuck in Congress, the IT industry is getting a boost with this legislation. Business buying IT equipment will be able to depreciate 30% of the cost the first year with the balance depreciated over five years. This legislation is expected to help lagging IT equipment sales.
