  • DNA Structure Discovered 50 Years Ago
  •   On February 28th, 1953, Cambridge University researcher Francis Crick walked into the Eagle Pub and announced the discovery of DNA's double helix structure. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, contains a base-4 genetic code that includes the instructions needed to produce protein, the basic building block of all living organisms. The entire genetic sequence for a human being requires 691 MBytes and would nearly fit on a CD. The discovery of the DNA structure earned Crick (and Watson) the 1962 Nobel Prize.

  • Spyware and Adware in "Free" Downloads
  •    Many ''free" software programs generate revenue by including embedded spyware that tracks and reports Internet usage or adware that delivers annoying pop-up ads. These programs are difficult to remove, frequently crash your operating system, and nearly always slow performance. Ad-Aware by Lavasoft and Spybot by PepiMK are two programs that detect and remove these undesirable programs.

  • Latest Internet Hoax: The Great 2003 Bug
  •    An Internet chain letter that warns of Internet downtime on March 3, 2003 (030303) is just another hoax. The letter claimed "The Great 2003 Bug" would cause Internet downtime due to an error in the operating system of Cisco devices. Sophos Antivirus provides 030303 Hoax details. Vmyths.com tracks hoaxes to help separate the real security threats from the fakes.

  • End of the PC As We Know It
  •    Intel is proposing to replace the venerable BIOS with an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI). EFI is a tiny operating system that will support high-resolution displays, graphical user interface, networking, and both local and remote diagnostics. The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), a small fixed software routine built into the motherboard, was never intended for long-term use and is due for replacement. Expect to see the EFI on the next generation of Intel chips.

  • Broadband Diagnostic Reports
  •    BroadbandReports.com includes a number of diagnostic tests that can be used to solve connection problems. Three of the most useful are the Speed Test to measure upload and download speeds, Tweak Test to evaluate the TCP/IP protocol broadband configuration, and Port Scan to assess port vulnerability to attack.
