Frequently Asked Questions

Holistic, theory-driven, evidence-based, competency-oriented.....a truly remarkable program.
What Nursing degrees are available?
Currently Stratford University has provisional approval to offer the Bachelors Degree at the Falls Church Campus. We hope to apply for and obtain approval for additional programs and locations in the future.

What does provisional approval mean?
Provisional approval is granted by the Virginia State Board of Nursing when a school has demonstrated that it has the academic, physical and financial resources to prepare students to successfully pass the National Licensing Exam upon graduation. Provisional approval allows the university to advertise and admit students. Obtaining provisional approval is a significant accomplishment and the first step toward full approval which is granted only after two years of graduates successfully pass the licensing exam.

What are the admission requirements?
To be considered for admission to the nursing program you must submit:

  • Evidence of completing a high school education
  • Evidence of completing the TEAS entrance exam
  • A personal statement explaining why you want to become a nurse
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Transcripts from any previous colleges or universities attended

Is there a wait list?
There is no wait list at the moment. However, admission is competitive and may be limited due to the nature of nursing courses and the availability of clinical agency placements. Additionally, current Stratford students will be considered for admission before accepting external students. We anticipate admitting between 20 and 30 students each quarter but this is subject to change.

How are students selected for admission?
Applicants are selected on the basis of the quality of the submitted materials. All items submitted will be evaluated and scored .Those with the highest scores will be admitted first.

What are the course prerequisites?
There are no course prerequisites for admission, but all students must maintain a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.00 scale and complete two quarters of anatomy and physiology (with corresponding lab courses) with a C or better in order to register for nursing courses.

What if I am already attending Stratford?
All students including current or former Stratford students must take the entrance exam and submit the required admission materials, but Stratford students who meet the admission criteria will be considered first.

What is the TEAS exam and how do I prepare?
The TEAS exam is a test of basic Math, Reading, English and Science. It was developed by a company called Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI). It has 170 multiple choice questions and takes 209 minutes to complete. Prep classes to help you improve your math and science skills are offered at the university on select Wednesdays each month from 4-6.

Please call to confirm when the classes are being held and to reserve a spot. Students can find more information about the exam and study materials from the ATI website http://www.atitesting.com.

Is there a fee for the TEAS exam?
The exam costs $25 and is paid directly to ATI (the testing company) at the time of the exam. Students should bring a photo ID and a credit card.

Where do I take the TEAS exam?
The TEAS exam will be given on Fridays at the Stratford University Falls Church campus. The exam takes about 3.5 hours to complete. Students must call the admissions office to register for the exam. Students should bring a photo ID and a credit card.

How long will it take to finish the program?
Students who take classes every quarter without a break can complete the program in as few as 13 quarters (a little over 2 ½ years).

What if I have taken all required Gen Ed courses?
Students who meet the admission requirements and have completed the general education courses may be able to enter the nursing program in the third quarter of the program. These students could potentially complete the program in 11 quarters (2 years and 10 weeks).

Please contact the director of the school to make an appointment for an individual transcript evaluation at 571-405-6512.

What if I have a bachelor’s degree in another field?
Students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field from a US accredited college or university with an overall grade point average of 2.8 or better on a 4.00 scale are not required to take the entrance exam. All other admission requirements must be met.
