Stratford First Scholarships

The Stratford First Scholarship is designed for eligible high school seniors who enroll at Stratford University during the summer and fall terms following their high school graduation. Up to five recipients are selected at each campus each year to receive $10,000 to be applied toward tuition and fees. This scholarship cannot be combined with any other Stratford scholarship, grant, or discount. Application Deadline: May 1st.

Q1. Who is eligible?
A. Graduating High School Seniors.

Q2. What is the value of the scholarship?
A. $10,000. Award will be divided by term over the course of study.

Q3. What are the enrollment requirements?
A. Students must enroll in 3 classes or 13½ quarter credit hours. Student must also be pursuing a post-secondary education for the first time.

Q4. Are employees and their dependents eligible for these scholarships?
A. Stratford University employees and dependents are not eligible if using the employee tuition discount/benefit. Please see the employee handbook for Stratford University’s educational benefits for employees and their dependents.

Q5. Do students have to enroll in consecutive terms or is the student allowed to skip a term at any point?
A. Student is allowed one (1) STNA per academic year, as outlined in the Catalog.

Q6. Will we require campuses to keep a hard copy of the source documentation that was used to verify eligibility?
A. Campuses will be required to keep a hard copy of source documentation.

Q7. Can a student apply for more than one scholarship or award program?
A. This scholarship cannot be used in conjunction with any other Stratford University scholarship, grant, or discount.

Q8. Is there a campus or regional limit to the number of students who can receive the Stratford First Scholarship?
A. Yes. Only five (5) Stratford First Scholarships are allowed per campus per year.

Q9. If the required G.P.A. is 3.0 and student has a 2.9, should they still apply?
A. If the GPA criterion is not met, student should not apply. All GPA requirements must be met according to the final transcript.

Q10. How quickly will I be notified?
A. The selection committee will make a decision within 7 business days of receipt of completed application and required documents.

Q11. Does the amount I receive in scholarships affect my eligibility for financial aid?
A. Scholarships may be used in addition to federal student aid, and outside funding sources.

Q12. What is the application deadline?
A. May 1st annually. Any applications received after the May 1st deadline will be accepted at the discretion of the Campus Director.

Q13. Is this scholarship available to international students?
A. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent resident.

Q14. Which department processes the scholarships?
A. The Student Accounts Office.

Q15. Who determines if I receive a scholarship?
A. A Stratford First Scholarship selection committee will determine the recipient(s). Awards will be based on GPA, Essay Question, and Community Service.

Q16. What is the Stratford Power Forward Program?
A. The Stratford Power Forward Program is a compilation of four (4) initiatives designed to help students reduce and/or manage student loan debt. These four programs/initiatives are:

  1. Stratford Scholarships (e.g. Stratford First & Culinary & Hospitality Competition Scholarships)
  2. Stratford Extra Rewards
  3. Stratford Guarantee
  4. Stratford Culinary Competition

Stratford Extra Rewards Program

Like a frequent flyer program, Stratford Extra Rewards offers students a way to “bank” points from already successful Stratford degree efforts to cover the costs of classes at the end of a student’s academic program.

Stratford Extra Rewards is available to first-time Stratford University students and to continuing students transferring 50% or less of their program requirements. Students must also be opting into direct cost options.

The program is valued at up to two free courses for associate’s students and up to four free courses for bachelor’s students. This scholarship cannot be combined with any other Stratford scholarship, grant, or discount. Students must sign the Extra Rewards program acknowledgement form confirming knowledge of the terms and conditions of the program if they are eligible and choose to participate.

Q1. What does the Stratford Extra Rewards Program cover?
A. A student enrolled in an AAS program can earn up to $166.50 in tuition credit, for each class successfully completed at Stratford University. Earnings are limited to out of pocket payments up to $3,330.
A student enrolled in a Bachelor’s program at Stratford University can earn up to $166.50 in tuition credit, for each class successfully completed at Stratford University. Earnings are limited to out of pocket payments up to $6,660.

Q2. What are the enrollment requirements?
A. Must maintain ¾ time enrollment each term (minimum two (2) classes per term) and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and Rate of Progress (ROP) requirements.

Q3. Are employees and their dependents eligible for these scholarships?

Q4. Do students have to enroll in consecutive terms or is the student allowed to skip a term at any point?
A. Student is allowed one STNA per academic year, as outlined in the Catalog.

Q5. What if the student fails a class?
A. As long as the term is completed with a minimum term GPA of 2.5 and 2 enrolled classes, the student will be eligible to receive tuition credit/points for that term. Student must also maintain Academic SAP requirements.

Q6. Can someone who enrolls in the Extra Rewards (ER) Program receive points retroactively?
A. Extra Rewards is only available on a “going forward” basis – assuming all other requirements for program enrollment are met. Points will not be awarded for activity prior to the effective date of signing up for the ER program.

Q8. Is there a campus or regional limit to the number of students who can receive the Extra Rewards Program?
A. There is no campus or regional limit to the number of recipients for the Extra Rewards Program.

Q9. Is this program applicable to international students?
A. Students must be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.

Q10. Who is eligible for the Extra Rewards Program?
A. Beginning Term 4 (August) 2016, the Extra Rewards Program is available to the following students who must also be opting into direct costs to qualify:

  • Students attending Stratford for the first time.
  • Re-admit students – returning after being separated from Stratford for one (1) year or more.
  • AAS students who received their undergraduate degree from Stratford and are re-enrolling at Stratford for a Bachelor’s program.
  • Current continuing and re-entry students provided they sign the “Letter of Acknowledgement” and agree to abide by the guidelines to participate in the program on a forward basis.

Q11. Will the student receive a credit balance once they receive the tuition credit/points?
A. Stratford Extra Reward credits have no cash value and are therefore nonrefundable; meaning that no refund will be issued in the event of a credit balance.

Q12. What is the Stratford Power Forward Program?
A. The Stratford Power Forward Program is a compilation of four (4) initiatives designed to help students reduce and/or manage student loan debt. These four programs/initiatives are:

  1. Stratford Scholarships (e.g. Stratford First & Culinary & Hospitality Competition Scholarships)
  2. Stratford Extra Rewards
  3. Stratford Guarantee
  4. Stratford Culinary Competition

Stratford Guarantee

The exclusive Stratford Guarantee helps ensure students’ success by giving students who demonstrated their best effort to attend and participate in class a second chance to retake that class at no cost* should they fail the first time. The value of the program varies based on the course to be repeated; and faculty member recommendation is required.

Stratford Extra Rewards is available to first-time Stratford University students and to continuing students transferring 50% or less of their program requirements. Students must also be opting into direct cost options.

Students must have had 100% attendance and received a failing grade in the course to be repeated. The students may only take the failed course one time within the Stratford Guarantee program.

*Exclusive of lab and supplemental instructional fees.

Q1. How many times can a student repeat a course under the Stratford Guarantee?
A. Eligible students may receive a complimentary course one time for each course. There is no limit to the number of different complimentary courses received in a program duration, as long as student maintains in compliance to Rate of Progress (ROP) and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements. Refer to the Catalog for ROP and SAP requirements.

Q2. Does taking a third course impact students financial aid?
A. All complimentary classes must be taken in addition to Title IV and VA eligibility minimums; Or taken alone as the only enrolled course during the following term.

Q3. Who approves the retaking of the course?
A. The Stratford Guarantee is granted based on Instructor or Program Director recommendation, with approval from the Campus Dean or Director.

Q4. How does the complimentary course reflect on a student’s ledger?
A. The course will not be reflected as a charge on the student’s ledger. Student Accounts will apply it as a credit to the ledger card.

Q5. Must the student take the course immediately?
A. Yes, the complimentary course must be taken the following term (where applicable).

Q6. What is the Stratford Power Forward Program?

Stratford Culinary Completition Scholarships

Offered to winning team members who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the Pro Start, CCAP, or Skills USA competitions in Virginia or Maryland.

Applications accepted year-round.
Scholarships must be used within one year.

Q1. If I win 1st place in an individual event and 2nd place in a team event can I use both scholarships towards my tuition?
A. Only one Scholarship may be used. This scholarship cannot be used in conjunction with any other Stratford University scholarship, grant, or tuition discount.

Q2. What is the value of the scholarships?
A. Culinary: 1st place $15,000; 2nd place $10,000; 3rd place $5,000.
Hospitality: 1st place $10,000; 2nd place $5,000; 3rd place $2,500.

Q3. Is there a deadline for these scholarships?
A. Yes, the application deadline varies depending on competition completion dates. Students who place must apply for scholarship within 60 days of placing in competition.

Q4. What are the eligibility requirements to compete?
A. To remain eligible, students must be enrolled in an eligible hospitality program in the School of Hospitality & Culinary Arts at Stratford University. Except with the approval of the campus director or designee, students receiving this award are required to enroll in a minimum of two (2) classes each quarter.

Q5. Are employees and their dependents eligible for these scholarships?

Q6. What if student decides to change their program?
A. If a recipient of this scholarship is admitted in the Bachelor’s program and changes to the AAS program prior to completing the BS degree, while remaining eligible for the award, previously awarded credits will be adjusted to the AAS level as if the student was originally in the AAS program. If a recipient of this scholarship is admitted in the AAS program and changes to the BS program prior to completing the AAS degree while remaining eligible for the award, previously awarded credits will be adjusted to the BS level as if the student was originally in the BS program.
