November 11, 2016

Stratford University made history on Friday November 11, 2016 by shattering the Guinness World Records record for Tallest Pyramid Cake towering 9 feet, 2 inches!

UPDATE: Stratford University is now featured on the Guinness World Records' "Officially Amazing" website!

Led by Stratford University Director of Culinary Arts and Hospitality, Chef Raimund Hofmeister and Certified Master Pastry Chef and Stratford instructor, Jan Bandula, Stratford’s Tallest Pyramid attempt called for 250 sheet cakes, 500 pounds of icing, and 400 pounds of raspberry jam. The finished cake weighed in at nearly 4 tons. The cake was baked at Stratford’s Baltimore campus and transported via refrigerated truck for assembly at Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge, VA. Assembly began overnight at 2:30 a.m. on Friday, November 11th; and icing and decoration of the cake began at 8:00 a.m., with judging by an official Guinness adjudicator by noon.

Team Stratford set out to break the current record of 6.59 feet set this past September, 2016 in India, and succeeded with a cake that towered 9 feet, 2 inches!

This monumental task included Stratford Master Chefs, Culinary instructors, and students from Stratford’s Baltimore MD, and Alexandria, and Woodbridge VA campuses. Instructors and students of the Stratford Hospitality Management program assisted with selling tickets for cake sales and serving the cake.

Following our victorious winning announcement, the entire onsite team worked for seven hours to dismantle, box, and sell slices and sheets of the cake to the public. Proceeds from the cake sales benefited the Fisher House organization sites at Ft. Belvoir and Richmond VA. Unsold portions were donated to Fisher House; Prince William County Police and Fire and Rescue; and The Good News Community Kitchen.

All proceeds went to benefit the Fisher House Foundation locations at Ft. Belvoir, VA and Richmond, VA. The Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes, located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.
